Research on Living Donor Kidney Transplantation

Research is being carried out by a Victoria University PhD student on barriers to live donor kidney transplantation in New Zealand.  The research will explore the barriers to transplantation and identify whether there are ways to improve access to transplantation for those patients who want one.

The researcher, Paula Martin, is a former kidney donor and is hoping the research will provide useful information that can be used in planning transplant services for patients.

As part of the research, a survey will be posted in October 2011 to people on the waiting list for a kidney transplant to find out their views about the barriers to live transplantation. Paula is hoping as many people as possible will complete the questionnaire, which is completely confidential.

For any queries about the research, Paula can be contacted on: paula.martin@vuw.ac.nz

Roadshow 2011
Our annual Roadshow,on October 29th at Pataka, Porirua, focusing on Transplants, was another great success!

Thank you to all our speakers who volunteered their time. Everyone's talks were very educational and in some instances, even funny.

WRKS is extremely privileged that Kelvin Lynn, KHNZ Medical Director and Renal Specialist, as well as Carmel Gregan-Ford, KHNZ Educator, generously vounteered their time and knowledge to attend our roadshow again. Very inspirational and a great sense of humour there Kelvin. Huge thanks to you both.

For the first time we had the Transplant Coordinators, Claire Beckett and Sheryl Sparks, and Renal Dietician, Becky Jones, from Wellington CCDHB attend and share some great information with us. Thank you ladies!

A special mention goes out to Committee Member, Bern Hanify. who arranged the opening entertainment. A group of music students from St Michaels school sang us 3 numbers. All were fabulous and fun! Many thanks Bern and students!

Special thanks go to Kathy Howarth who put another stellar day together and her children Ben, Elsie and family friend Caleb.

A great day was had by all. Please go to view to see photos of some special moments.

WRKS CAMPER VAN SURVEY
Researchers Confirm Safety of Donation of Kidneys.

After the procedure, the donors live as long or longer than those in the general population.

March 10, 2010|By Thomas H. Maugh II

People who donate a kidney to a sick friend or relative live at least as long as others in the general population and may live somewhat longer because they tend to take better care of themselves after the procedure, researchers reported Tuesday.

"We have intuitively . . . felt this way, and hoped that this operation is safe, but this is the first time that we have been able to demonstrate it in a national representation of live donors," said Dr. Dorry L. Segev of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, lead author of the report in the Journal of the American Medical Assn.
