Dealing with the Emotional Effects of Kidney Disease
Here you'll find a couple of ways of handling the emotional effects of kidney disease.
Prepare for All Natural Disasters
WRKS is reminding patients and their families to prepare for all natural disasters, including earthquakes, tornadoes and flooding. These can cause Dialysis Units to close and your ability to dialyse at home to be effected.
In order to be prepared for unexpected emergency situations, WRKS recommends dialysis patients create an emergency kit that includes:
- Emergency phone numbers for their doctors and dialysis units, as well as contact information for a nearby dialysis unit e.g. Waikato Hospital.
- At least three days worth of medications, as well as a list of the dosage amounts; available from your renal nurse or doctor (keep this up to date).
- If diabetic, a week’s worth of supplies (syringes, insulin, alcohol wipes, glucose monitoring strips, etc.)
- Access to clean water ( a litre a day), food, can opener, first aid supplies, and a wind-up flashlight (available from the WRKS office or CSO) and a radio.
For additional emergency preparedness information please see the article by the Auckland Kidney Society here (article starts page 6) or:
Protect your Kidneys and Save your Heart
We now know that kidney disease and heart disease go hand in hand. Both are common and frequently occur together. About 10 to 15% of the adult population in New Zealand have kidney disease detected by screening (nearly 500,000 people) and this number is on the rise.
